I've been wanting to do something with glass painting markers a long time, when suddenly the famous design of the Unknown Pleasures record by Joy Division popped into my head. The graphic line structure is very thankful and easy to print on almost anything. It doesn't need colour or shapes. It's been used a thousand times for tattoos and all kinds of merchandise ever since the record was released in the seventies.<br />
<br />
Since I am a fan, it's always a pleasure when I can funk anything up with Joy Division-related graphics. So I hope you like it too! And if you're not a fan, you can use this tutorial as an inspiration to make something similar. For a few pennies you'll have a trendy drinking glass with some Urban Outfitters allure!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<b>1 -</b> <b>WHAT YOU'LL NEED:</b> Look for a regular drinking glass to the shape and size you like. Thrift stores are great for things like that. Also find a glass painting marker with 5/7mm thickness.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9COqv5ZDDVyv1TzDVBSsO-TI_BtuNUiQ3Wdds9HPsxQ5PUxRJatq5irn7A2L9N31JztKODfDFJ1g8uJtcqXjtK1zDsBDDGBo4uYT2rSiOhfRyv3xgnvW2KBjCb6Yuet6YnCOsToQkoTQ/s1600/joydiv%23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="496" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9COqv5ZDDVyv1TzDVBSsO-TI_BtuNUiQ3Wdds9HPsxQ5PUxRJatq5irn7A2L9N31JztKODfDFJ1g8uJtcqXjtK1zDsBDDGBo4uYT2rSiOhfRyv3xgnvW2KBjCb6Yuet6YnCOsToQkoTQ/s640/joydiv%23.jpg" width="710" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>2 -</b> Print out the design below or leave it open on your computer screen to directly draw it from there. I chose the second to save some paper ;) You'll find a high resolution version of it <a href="http://www.cvltnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Joy-Division_Unknown-Pleasures_Shes-Lost-Control-1979.jpeg">here</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.cvltnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Joy-Division_Unknown-Pleasures_Shes-Lost-Control-1979.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.cvltnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Joy-Division_Unknown-Pleasures_Shes-Lost-Control-1979.jpeg" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>3 -</b> Now you'll be needing some time to draw the design onto the glass. You can work on this as long as you want, it doesn't really matter if you haven't got a perfect copy. The design is kind of recognizable in itself. Do watch out when drawing the separate lines though, the middle is the hardest part because the lines don't cross each other. So you have to watch out where the lines end and where/when you need to continue them. I suggest drawing one line at a time and working your way up/downstairs. Also go around the full width of the glass to 'close' the design. If you have a hard time to draw the lines straight, try to use the bottom of the glass as a guide.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifFv1HjIZ3NuHq65Xse1Vl9blcLTnyBJAAK3I_9qM7anlUF8OhEU9VigEWl2_brESW7PKahINt476p3Jd3mxNguT2ZnVyMF0cn7Yvy-kJubWj-WKb2yH6jIUp2Cbf86_gdokqbqUo9nPw/s1600/joy2a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifFv1HjIZ3NuHq65Xse1Vl9blcLTnyBJAAK3I_9qM7anlUF8OhEU9VigEWl2_brESW7PKahINt476p3Jd3mxNguT2ZnVyMF0cn7Yvy-kJubWj-WKb2yH6jIUp2Cbf86_gdokqbqUo9nPw/s1600/joy2a.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>5 -</b> Now you can fill the glass with milk to enjoy your design and watch the lines fill up! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I get moody and sad. But this time I try not to curse falling leaves and rain, cold and spiders. I do love blankets, tea and new knitting projects. I started a blanket a few days ago which will be a perfect project for when I'm on the train to work. Then it will forever be my personal victory blanket to always remind me of 'that time when I got my first job'. <br />

Excuse me for this emotional intermezzo, and the fact that there's already enough discussion going on about the internet. I'll probably say something cliché; the internet kind of makes me sad sometimes. Ever since I started using it, I've seen so many wonderful things like a door that opened to my small insignificant life. But the older I get, the more it seems like something I have to use to the fullest or something I get lost in. Here's the newest app, download it! You know you won't resist! And when you got it, you even want more and better apps. Because we're never satisfied. Or even better, the more sophisticated life gets, the more I want to <i>be</i> and <i>have</i> 'retro'. I spent an hour looking and surfing for the perfect retro bookshelf today without success. Earlier this week I found a beautiful free magazine and all I remember was being disappointed in the number of pages. What's up with being so unthankful?<br />
<br />
Of course it's a good thing to always have something like a virtual resort. We probably all have the image in our minds of a dirty, weird person when we would talk about an internet addict. But I believe we all are these days. Because admit it, we would tweet about that guy to laugh with him. So I find the internet to be some sort of wonderland with a 'dangerous' side. <br />
<br />
Remember this scene from Pinochio? He gets trapped into joining the bad guy to some wonderful island where he can have fun <i>aaaallll</i> day, and then transforms into a donkey. How Disney tries to tell us at a young age that life isn't possible if there's only fun. You can't be greedy — and even virtual greediness can make us forget the important things.<br />
<br />
<center>
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tgmfV5VLHvs" width="420"></iframe></center>
<br />
Also, I don't remember being as scared as a toddler as I am now when watching that scene. I mean, who had to come up with a script suitable for children and would then come up with a wooden boy slowly changing into a donkey? Disney is weird sometimes, makes me think the script writers took something. But I have to admit, without all of the weird shit it wouldn't reach its full effect. <br />
<br />
We look for the biggest fish in order to get inspiration for our own lives. To get the cheapest and the best. At least I know I do. My constant search for inspiration and creativity, new things to make and do and share, is getting a bit tiresome. Seeing an amazing picture only makes me think "I wish I did that!" and a brilliant DIY project makes me feel stupid for not thinking of that myself.<br />
<br />
Don't get me wrong though, I'm not that stupid to believe the internet makes people change into donkeys or anything. At least not literally. But when I see some people acting on Facebook (is it just me, or do people really act more like donkeys on Facebook than Twitter or anything else?) they just already might have that ears and tail. I mean, my Facebook cover is like a big deal and I really look for a good one sometimes. Please tell me I'm not the only one.<br />
<br />
After a comparison with Pinocchio, I would also like to use cake as a metaphor. You get a cake as a present and it's superbe. But you know there will be an end to it later that day or maybe that week. It's fun but it's not endless. The internet is. No wonder I get tired of it.<br />
<br />
Do you see internet like a wonderland too sometimes, instead of <i>just</i> another source of information? I would really like to know your opinions about this, or if I am the only one who feels like this. I would love to see your personal metaphors to the internet. To close this rant, I would like to end with the fact that in spite of my <i>internet blues</i>, I do think this blogpost was a good thing. And that's exactly what I should do — use the internet more to my own advantage.

Maar bon, de boodschap 'thanks for shopping with us' maakt veel goed.

<br />
;)<br />
<br />
Caroline Vermeirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17408533922189510757noreply@blogger.com0Temse, België51.12879 4.21012551.088930500000004 4.131161 51.1686495 4.289089tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5322734653067171905.post-54555723345155543312012-10-18T07:26:00.002-07:002012-10-18T08:59:25.052-07:00GIVE-AWAY — Happy Pencils<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So, I've been doing months without a mouse pad. This is visibly not good for my desk, so I decided to finally look for one that fits my needs and pleases my eyes.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As I am a very picky person I rarely find something that keeps me pleased for a long time or even at all. I almost always have to tweak things to get them to my liking. So, that counts for a mouse pad as well.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwJlSLIrUx0qpB-D9eywKy6eLNu5sL789ilqaYeJuGPlDKTJpNYpED2rxHuewiLMRwgq5OjgpviJKrUiaBI_7TTB38dycOUccVyUMfmKOp0fbFUakI5GoDuqHiArseJpxnEpXrnvAqmDA/s1600/mousepadmakeover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: xx-small;"><img alt="" border="0" height="440" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwJlSLIrUx0qpB-D9eywKy6eLNu5sL789ilqaYeJuGPlDKTJpNYpED2rxHuewiLMRwgq5OjgpviJKrUiaBI_7TTB38dycOUccVyUMfmKOp0fbFUakI5GoDuqHiArseJpxnEpXrnvAqmDA/s640/mousepadmakeover.jpg" title="" width="640" /></span></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
Mouse pads essentially have a sort of soft anti-slip subsurface so you could make a mouse pad out of anything that has that. I didn't have anything similar lying around so I just used an old mouse pad. It's a lot easier because you won't have a lot of work with it. Here's what I did.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Materials:</b><br />
- Old mousepad<br />
- X-acto knife<br />
- Spray paint (colour of your choice)<br />
- Newspaper<br />
- Strong tape or contact paper<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>What to do:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>1. </b>Take the old mouse pad and start scratching off the surface you normally use to put the mouse on. This will now become the bottom side and vice versa. This is kind of a tricky part because the material is hard to tear off. I found it worked best to make a few scratches first and then peel it all off, starting in the middle, piece by piece. Be careful for your nails and fingers because both the plastic and the knife are sharp of course. At the end it's important the plastic is off, as you can see it's not a beautiful surface but that doesn't matter since it's never gonna be visible. Without the plastic, this side can now be used as the anti-slip side.<br />
<br />
<b>2. </b>When all of the plastic is gone, turn to the bottom side again. You will now want to tape off one half of the surface (which is a triangle) and spray paint the other half (the other triangle). It's very important to really have a strong tape covering the part that doesn't need paint, because bad tape will lift off and will make a mess. I chose a silver metallic tone. You can spray both sides if you like, but to keep it clean I only did one. Take it all outside and start spraying! Don't forget to use the newspaper to keep the paint from covering the floor of course.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Tadaa! </b>Let it dry for a while.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1e/Teenage_dream_screenshot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="172" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1e/Teenage_dream_screenshot.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://5.images.singer22.com/static/insets/images/RB3025-62MMGOLD_INSET3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://5.images.singer22.com/static/insets/images/RB3025-62MMGOLD_INSET3.jpg" width="136" /></a></div>
<br />
Ik wil dus eigenlijk al heel lang gewoon <i>nen echte</i>. Vooral de <a href="http://www.smartbuyglasses.be/designer-zonnebrillen/Ray-Ban/-----------1-">Wayfarer</a> spreekt me aan.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8v9ieyzFl50v8rXBHVbOua2MBqByfMKL0d15OZ67EoYdX4PHhCIzcynR3iNy-g8XHJFzKXYc1JwqVz129TriF24Ifh1IVLCYxeDMlUWXB6qkmECVhvintLnbYmddthwpxl98UWknwO_o/s1600/Schermafbeelding+2012-10-10+om+15.42.56.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8v9ieyzFl50v8rXBHVbOua2MBqByfMKL0d15OZ67EoYdX4PHhCIzcynR3iNy-g8XHJFzKXYc1JwqVz129TriF24Ifh1IVLCYxeDMlUWXB6qkmECVhvintLnbYmddthwpxl98UWknwO_o/s400/Schermafbeelding+2012-10-10+om+15.42.56.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.smartbuyglasses.be/public/images/designer_sunglasses/Ray%20Ban/Ray_Ban_901_1332497770.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="141" src="http://cdn.smartbuyglasses.be/public/images/designer_sunglasses/Ray%20Ban/Ray_Ban_901_1332497770.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: auto;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Achja, <i>what did I expect?</i><br />

<br />
I recently decided to start cooking some more and try fun recipes. This one is easy and not very time consuming. I'm not gonna mention healthy because I don't believe it is, but at least it's got some spinach.<br />
<br />
<b>What you will need for 4 rolls:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
- 4 sheets of puff pastry<br />
- 1 box of Boursin<br />
- 1 onion<br />
- Spinach (I used the microwave kind)<br />
<br />
<b>How to make it:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>1</b> Use either a stone dish or a regular plate for the oven with baking paper.<br />
<br />
<b>2 </b>Cut the onion into fine pieces.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyL5W3Jt19r5ms11_UGnSgtYGAj4f5DAWiPm2DHcpngMq0KeA3SHndNfm0ybkEyWffPny1s8DaCtgWzTyU74TsEgJHq3TqmQI7mO68arALaysYeqXwPYjQdJnQys6GfpRoUc8fxnZTJUA/s1600/step1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyL5W3Jt19r5ms11_UGnSgtYGAj4f5DAWiPm2DHcpngMq0KeA3SHndNfm0ybkEyWffPny1s8DaCtgWzTyU74TsEgJHq3TqmQI7mO68arALaysYeqXwPYjQdJnQys6GfpRoUc8fxnZTJUA/s400/step1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>3</b> Take a sheet of pastry and shape it to your likeness. It's usually kind of thick so I suggest to stretch it for a bit.<br />
<br />
<b>4</b> Make sure your spinach is thawed using either the microwave or a pot, depending on what kind you bought.<br />
<br />
<b>5</b> Use a knife to spread some Boursin onto your sheet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifnqa9W4yDiwQz5dxl19DJl4pM2XFSc14YQg_uGD1M4ydAtAB6XiWy8KEwgvc9ES8V-N3fwwuHduy-Pa21rQRYeEAil3gcpw4P6p5DwQIouTFLkzXzfjdxlQ9hezXNPbH6Plwipxpe4Xg/s1600/food3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="245" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifnqa9W4yDiwQz5dxl19DJl4pM2XFSc14YQg_uGD1M4ydAtAB6XiWy8KEwgvc9ES8V-N3fwwuHduy-Pa21rQRYeEAil3gcpw4P6p5DwQIouTFLkzXzfjdxlQ9hezXNPbH6Plwipxpe4Xg/s400/food3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<b><br /></b>
<b>6 </b>Take some pieces of onion and spread them out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2q9X3rkQa1mvG3wqKUQEMR4UhXuVxlkDL6di2iEOzkK9mQCS8Tu6ILlh0uyRvN6MGBkg67qZCozjsLpZHdBqAD_ADRjbUIq8yLG-Yk50tACkGPKqs_5iN6wVioFe4rLgiIHKgsArnJmc/s1600/food4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2q9X3rkQa1mvG3wqKUQEMR4UhXuVxlkDL6di2iEOzkK9mQCS8Tu6ILlh0uyRvN6MGBkg67qZCozjsLpZHdBqAD_ADRjbUIq8yLG-Yk50tACkGPKqs_5iN6wVioFe4rLgiIHKgsArnJmc/s400/food4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>7</b> At last, take your spinach and spread it out on the sheet with a knife. Make sure not to get too close to the edges as it will fall off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJywXQYvJX7NcnmRsJnWkucTIut5QBWMNzg3ZkNyz21BUh1uTRrsyGvZtJOKsjks7jKZJD1zHPYHiVGLH_rfuTkr7Z_RhQQo3hi_SJ-X6YbNF_Sfp8dQH1ByFmUi_Ju88ykk060o8v-yc/s1600/food5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJywXQYvJX7NcnmRsJnWkucTIut5QBWMNzg3ZkNyz21BUh1uTRrsyGvZtJOKsjks7jKZJD1zHPYHiVGLH_rfuTkr7Z_RhQQo3hi_SJ-X6YbNF_Sfp8dQH1ByFmUi_Ju88ykk060o8v-yc/s400/food5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>8</b> Roll up your pastry and preheat the oven on 150 degrees Celcuis.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>9</b> I like to put some extra Boursin on the outsides where the pastry ends to make sure they won't fold open.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I wouldn't say these aren't worth visiting though. I had been to the city before and already saw all of the famous things, so I wanted to do a more alternative trip where I wandered more than being a typical tourist and rush from one museum to another monument. This was a very good idea since I discovered a lot of things which felt more like treasures because they weren't planned. Of course I had done some research on the internet for shops worth visiting and whatnot. Here are some places I would definitely recommend. Warning: take a lot of money with you, because you will need it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFL9qSQYbx15dnKaH8gLohLmspVzN4jYL17y8Bf9iUYrR9rGdRhnw0ovk46MmWrtZG54saBOPdeazZxq5cIL0DCTjZjOYJzFgSnFg66rxZBhX5XxZkCO9oABwTBdGsHHOdpP175qz0cOg/s1600/whatIboughtinparis.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFL9qSQYbx15dnKaH8gLohLmspVzN4jYL17y8Bf9iUYrR9rGdRhnw0ovk46MmWrtZG54saBOPdeazZxq5cIL0DCTjZjOYJzFgSnFg66rxZBhX5XxZkCO9oABwTBdGsHHOdpP175qz0cOg/s320/whatIboughtinparis.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<b>1 - Au Petit Bonheur La Chance</b><br />
As I walked in, I fell in love immediately. Stuffed with lovely little treasures, this shop could take hours of your day and you still wouldn't regret it. Especially the little bowl (which cost 25 euros but totally worth it) I don't regret buying. I also found the notebook labels and the domino stamp there which are in the bowl on the photo.<br />
<br />
<i>13 Rue de Saint Paul</i><br />
<i>4e arrondissement</i><br />
<br />
<b>2 - Azag</b><br />
In the first photo you see an Orla Kiely cup I bought at Azag, along with the tape in the second photo. They sell masking tape and other kinds, like the Alice in Wonderland tape on the right. It's a lovely shop with all kinds of design stuff.<br />
<br />
<i>9 Rue François Miron</i><br />
<i>4e arrondissement</i><br />
<br/>
<b>2a - Bazaar Hotel de Ville</b><br />
Take a deep breath before entering, because you will find EVERYTHING in one shop with a lot of floors. But my favorite floor was the stationary/art supplies of course. There's also a packaging section, where I found the lovely little Orla Kiely box.<br />
<br />
<i>36 Rue de la Verrerie</i><br />
<i>4e arrondissement</i><br />
<br />
<b>3 - La Marché Saint-Pierre</b><br />
Saint Pierre is a little neighborhood near Montmartre. There is an art gallery, some kind of bazaar to shop, and a few fabric shops. Again, it was love at first sight. So many fabric and so cheap!<br />
<br />
<i>2 Rue Charles Nodier</i><br />
<i>18e arrondissement</i><br />
<br />
<b>4 - Niou</b><br />
The stickers you see (which are designed by Tom Schamp, a lovely illustrator from Belgium) I bought at Niou, a lovely toy shop next to Au Petit Bonheur De Chance. They have all kinds of original toys. However it's meant for children, I could buy everything they have. This shop made me wish I was still a kid, more than any other time of the day.<br />
<br />
<i>11 Rue de Saint Paul</i><br />
<i>4e arrondissement</i>
<br><br>
Furthermore, I planned on doing a concert during my trip. I found out that One Night Only was playing at the Maroquinerie (which is a great venue/bar by the way) while I was there. I didn't know them before, and I wasn't very much of a fan when I first heard their music but now my appreciation has grown a bit, now I actually like them a lot. Sometimes you just have to admit to your own (guilty) pleasures.

It's a very simple technique once you get the hang of it. Enjoy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLhgDpbwrGf1DI03RkCA-uvES9mjNkuRg6yUD6u8wohpFcRSnUNtPqX-cXxsx2sZtpj57zXaKEDxlPPZgKRvyNnSzqSlpDGe1kdCi_i70_Y1_ovAhZEfnF-Qg8B92gWhY-PeFt_VhsvYU/s1600/tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="412" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLhgDpbwrGf1DI03RkCA-uvES9mjNkuRg6yUD6u8wohpFcRSnUNtPqX-cXxsx2sZtpj57zXaKEDxlPPZgKRvyNnSzqSlpDGe1kdCi_i70_Y1_ovAhZEfnF-Qg8B92gWhY-PeFt_VhsvYU/s640/tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM_kP9dPfPEURetk0Eqw45aXn6aDeqKy9f1h8OjQxw8N3S2Op8VTGWa6Lg4Q7ynADOaY3P43xJqiBvVoeQ72wf475IsTnWQNjSPodedFIZlAxCwK9PMwj6uslJg9Fnzg6OoUB3su0dadk/s1600/materiaal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM_kP9dPfPEURetk0Eqw45aXn6aDeqKy9f1h8OjQxw8N3S2Op8VTGWa6Lg4Q7ynADOaY3P43xJqiBvVoeQ72wf475IsTnWQNjSPodedFIZlAxCwK9PMwj6uslJg9Fnzg6OoUB3su0dadk/s1600/materiaal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="374" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM_kP9dPfPEURetk0Eqw45aXn6aDeqKy9f1h8OjQxw8N3S2Op8VTGWa6Lg4Q7ynADOaY3P43xJqiBvVoeQ72wf475IsTnWQNjSPodedFIZlAxCwK9PMwj6uslJg9Fnzg6OoUB3su0dadk/s400/materiaal.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>YOU WILL NEED:<br />
<br />
— Paper, of course. Size doesn't matter yet.<br />
— Cardboard for the covers<br />
— Wood glue. It's a really friendly glue because it doesn't smell and it doesn't stick to your fingers. Bookbinding glue is probably even better but you can get by with this.<br />
— A ruler<br />
— Brush to apply glue<br />
— Paper for the decoration of the cover (I used some old wallpaper that I found at a thrift store. It's great and strong paper for this purpose!)<br />
— An X-acto knife or something similar in my case<br />
— Thread to bind the book, you could use ribbon if you want to make it fancy<br />
— A needle big enough to handle whatever you're going to use to sew<br />
— An awl or a drill<br />
— You also need some things that are so natural that I forgot to put them in the photo: a pencil and something to hold the pages together like a paper clip)<br />
<br />
————<br />
<br />
<b>STEP 1: Cutting the boards to size.</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX5qPUF7EX5QpwK50xBtlJ7VxGJaynSW6pgxbbeb4sHM-0nEYMsSffrG5bJe-4D5qxm9AsABZYb1Pd7UzUbtye4i8DHqS2ZE1-NsSW2crgb07YXNqSvO2zIB2XlBhhi9H9Du6RPEQCm6c/s1600/1+cuttingtheboards.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="273" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX5qPUF7EX5QpwK50xBtlJ7VxGJaynSW6pgxbbeb4sHM-0nEYMsSffrG5bJe-4D5qxm9AsABZYb1Pd7UzUbtye4i8DHqS2ZE1-NsSW2crgb07YXNqSvO2zIB2XlBhhi9H9Du6RPEQCm6c/s400/1+cuttingtheboards.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">First, decide what size you want the book (and thus the covers) to be. As you can see I took A4 boards and cut off 9 centimeters in step 1 and 2. Then, cut a small piece of 2 centimeters approximately (step 3 and 4). Do all of this for both covers. This is the part where the holes will be and this will allow you to neatly hide them when the book is opened.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"><b>STEP 2: Decorating the boards.</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Cut the paper to size, but leave some space around to glue it. Put the two pieces of each board on the paper and leave 1/4 inch space between them. You can use a ruler to make sure they are aligned. Spread glue all over the pieces of cardboard and turn them around when ready. Then, cut off the corners (don't cut right next to the cardboard, otherwise your corners will look rubbish). Glue the sides of the paper to the boards.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ-BLo9wXSsm5DRr1Rd0miRvlvU_tWPC6Tftx3PzzhJA1nL2ppuNdeyvtuknWeySKCIjfknz3yqRZFw4zNyPstmxqBWicbh9yr9tPSDeERapIOFfOkkMObeYY7EvIPKIXVQ9ZQR7musBg/s1600/boars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ-BLo9wXSsm5DRr1Rd0miRvlvU_tWPC6Tftx3PzzhJA1nL2ppuNdeyvtuknWeySKCIjfknz3yqRZFw4zNyPstmxqBWicbh9yr9tPSDeERapIOFfOkkMObeYY7EvIPKIXVQ9ZQR7musBg/s320/boars.jpg" width="242" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>STEP 3: Covering the insides of the boards.</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ilSHRdFAlcPvz35OTf0cA6eCwBKXQXCUrEeHRP_ZOgl86PuRErqXyM9WKxUuXdXKtnCSyY8kMfA4J8C8A9rmv_1NmCcSl1PxTHOmiyRhIcjrudnBQklyPwsrnR1_AOPFfYNID1SiFpA/s1600/schutblad.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ilSHRdFAlcPvz35OTf0cA6eCwBKXQXCUrEeHRP_ZOgl86PuRErqXyM9WKxUuXdXKtnCSyY8kMfA4J8C8A9rmv_1NmCcSl1PxTHOmiyRhIcjrudnBQklyPwsrnR1_AOPFfYNID1SiFpA/s320/schutblad.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Get some colored paper that fits your cover design. Cut it to size by leaving a few millimeters on each side. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh6cSzBR_P4Ggy5oLnh6SMzcoO-_FGrsSoeWlDyZxXHmvL76hO_F3JXEIQwsa54PBJe6yr1wDR7kK4XNPmOEbO2qkEC8xpX5SW_Cvg38hMd42zp7REOFHFeFlvn39vKY1P-JUIwPlrJUw/s1600/schutblad2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh6cSzBR_P4Ggy5oLnh6SMzcoO-_FGrsSoeWlDyZxXHmvL76hO_F3JXEIQwsa54PBJe6yr1wDR7kK4XNPmOEbO2qkEC8xpX5SW_Cvg38hMd42zp7REOFHFeFlvn39vKY1P-JUIwPlrJUw/s320/schutblad2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I like to get it as straight as possible by stroking it with my ruler. You can see some bumps in the paper but they disappear after you've let it dry for a while.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>STEP 4: Cutting the paper to size.</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvV0JHqMH1EHJ8spWTtVTqRf7CpbrDDiO3QHGvymQyJtxhZjyR3TS3nQvPJvIQZ1TDbrGlE3Q52YzSNX0oVh3nFBPVaAZgP3mQMQUSW4m_ovVB9UiZJYmcZWIKoqOV7dGiLrJ2G8N5jPQ/s1600/19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvV0JHqMH1EHJ8spWTtVTqRf7CpbrDDiO3QHGvymQyJtxhZjyR3TS3nQvPJvIQZ1TDbrGlE3Q52YzSNX0oVh3nFBPVaAZgP3mQMQUSW4m_ovVB9UiZJYmcZWIKoqOV7dGiLrJ2G8N5jPQ/s320/19.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Once that is done you can leave the boards alone for a while. The next step is to cut the paper block to size. As you can see I didn't have to cut off a lot of it. You can see my one hand pushing down the ruler and the paper beneath to make sure nothing moves, and my other hand pushing and cutting with the knife at the same time. It's important to use a lot of pressure here because you will fuck up your paper if you don't. You don't want to end up with ugly feathered edges!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg16vv42gNNgwbt8O6yrtE6mg6h_RyNtq-_E1ZAx66SdzxMmtwgyjZ7GSBDwPP29uBkJzWKgX56T9pBEOhV5T7O5O4S2dliy70QhKa6xDML1d5MQf74LvBa_JNMI08TC5e_5uPK87awRBE/s1600/20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg16vv42gNNgwbt8O6yrtE6mg6h_RyNtq-_E1ZAx66SdzxMmtwgyjZ7GSBDwPP29uBkJzWKgX56T9pBEOhV5T7O5O4S2dliy70QhKa6xDML1d5MQf74LvBa_JNMI08TC5e_5uPK87awRBE/s320/20.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is what you should have by now. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>STEP 5: Punching the holes.</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9E0es6iv3r5R268siNT87AhmtUic4omqoUA8GAINsyuHCMzydrR_bstae0IFQiNCnCdtW6-1QMJQhQt7lQndPQwAZHre7N7xEM3MrXmtTxUOhbndwdZlLR3Kc05xVqyq9RCp1DL9b0gA/s1600/holes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9E0es6iv3r5R268siNT87AhmtUic4omqoUA8GAINsyuHCMzydrR_bstae0IFQiNCnCdtW6-1QMJQhQt7lQndPQwAZHre7N7xEM3MrXmtTxUOhbndwdZlLR3Kc05xVqyq9RCp1DL9b0gA/s320/holes.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For this part you will need to view full size because you can't see those little holes. Draw a line 1,5 cm from the edge, and draw some holes on it. Watch out before you start punching. I ended up punching holes on the wrong side the first time because this book is almost a square. Draw/punch 4 holes, all beautifully spread over the whole thing.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA4pFB3vqO2gMY_kQNi_JJktoyZ1ti1ccw4jL60eTWzuiJTLs2OYO7jaojaoiD1g7bUK5sF1Pm1K7kLpxCsn-KzzhG1TXUOv-G8n24i3CNqeCtMHbs_DzJ5ZuKab7Y9gj3C35YVN9rEjM/s1600/punch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA4pFB3vqO2gMY_kQNi_JJktoyZ1ti1ccw4jL60eTWzuiJTLs2OYO7jaojaoiD1g7bUK5sF1Pm1K7kLpxCsn-KzzhG1TXUOv-G8n24i3CNqeCtMHbs_DzJ5ZuKab7Y9gj3C35YVN9rEjM/s320/punch.jpg" width="248" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now punch away!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheeV6WgXlKOhvOe88wE_Y3pze3IOMfD0n62OH8nqG_ngY_8RzlzEBxh62reGMHnGedEsotSxrdHwMcpglTaTjzCt_Tj5Ssbh8LCJRUoUc1fIEzl6HPHasc_Q9xrnSnS4yc5wI4ajc330s/s1600/28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheeV6WgXlKOhvOe88wE_Y3pze3IOMfD0n62OH8nqG_ngY_8RzlzEBxh62reGMHnGedEsotSxrdHwMcpglTaTjzCt_Tj5Ssbh8LCJRUoUc1fIEzl6HPHasc_Q9xrnSnS4yc5wI4ajc330s/s320/28.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Using the first page as a guide, draw the holes on the boards. Be careful before you punch because I have made the fault before not to check if I was punching the holes in the right order (again -_-). The board for the back of the book has the same holes in reversed order, keep this in mind and you'll be fine.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Start sewing in the second hole from the left. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Turn around again and go to the next hole on your way. This time, you'll go into the same hole 3 times. So, a while ago I bought a sewing machine. A big one with 30 stitches, not the little one I reviewed earlier on this blog. Finally I have a proper machine for myself instead of using the old one of my mom, which is very loud and clumsy. It made me believe it was my fault, while it was just the machine. Being able to sew properly, I could use a pincushion. Click read more for the tutorial!<br />

You only need something like an egg holder (anything that resembles will do), filling (I used the one they sell to fill teddybears), and something to hold it together. That's it!</div></div></div></div>Caroline Vermeirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17408533922189510757noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5322734653067171905.post-69683608768722513132010-12-09T10:56:00.000-08:002010-12-10T11:23:24.107-08:00Haul-idays at Chronicle BooksActually this is not sweet at all, this contest was US-only as I read on <a href="http://emilydenisephotography.com/blog">Emily</A>'s blog. It feels good. I love the place, I never lived in a city before and this is my favorite city of the country. I feel more alive in a way. I also like arranging everything into a new room and putting up photos and posters on the wall, it makes me feel kinda new.<br /><br />I went to <a href="http://www.handmade-in-belgium.com/">Made in Belgium</A> a while ago, which is a market for handmade things and the people who like to buy/make it. Here's what I won:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9V-n819NFxXXQX9fX9wx9AlRpu2Wn8eQyD_fsxgmJum0SY7B5YdEiJH08hESZcNSytHibfzuKHBCX7fo9qQkSpWy_IBoiFYkWjrF09bu2f4kOXvl8PCKIJ0b6BIBeb9aq091OsbFESJw/s1600/giveaway.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 365px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9V-n819NFxXXQX9fX9wx9AlRpu2Wn8eQyD_fsxgmJum0SY7B5YdEiJH08hESZcNSytHibfzuKHBCX7fo9qQkSpWy_IBoiFYkWjrF09bu2f4kOXvl8PCKIJ0b6BIBeb9aq091OsbFESJw/s400/giveaway.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512647003483736674" /></a>I love everything but my favorite is the necklace, it's really beautiful.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvnV68NPbAzzanLqE6Ds6Uit0H2vKmMMCQsLmlp7ye7lBdEJpYaB1PmaxshjBxYtag5YshF_Y2bS67_gEvivO8aBtp6JGo1Iu3YKPcpj8mTCzuVcfIOJzvPPQdikGjFuNojORtp1NDyA8/s1600/necklace"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvnV68NPbAzzanLqE6Ds6Uit0H2vKmMMCQsLmlp7ye7lBdEJpYaB1PmaxshjBxYtag5YshF_Y2bS67_gEvivO8aBtp6JGo1Iu3YKPcpj8mTCzuVcfIOJzvPPQdikGjFuNojORtp1NDyA8/s400/necklace" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512649475236837522" /></a><br />The people on the market were also very nice, I met <a href="http://melissamilis.blogspot.com">Melissa</a> and bought a book from her, had some fun in her photobooth.<br /><br />Thanks to Made in Belgium I felt the need to make something myself, I searched for something that I was familiar with and got into crochet again. Made me an iPhone case:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh14tG9-wdMU5JHdYQeW1QVPXZ_drA6OmPQs9XecYM335xRBX11N4ASB8mKRdZ8Vvxx8Avj7R8_aqC1ayyQeNUhxR2VPSFa7Ljz7QptKFLuVj7k7oxGAplYx-G3cKP9vg1C1k15UsKzsxs/s1600/iphone1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh14tG9-wdMU5JHdYQeW1QVPXZ_drA6OmPQs9XecYM335xRBX11N4ASB8mKRdZ8Vvxx8Avj7R8_aqC1ayyQeNUhxR2VPSFa7Ljz7QptKFLuVj7k7oxGAplYx-G3cKP9vg1C1k15UsKzsxs/s400/iphone1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512648395992815218" /></a><br />I set the goal for myself to make a lot of things and open an Etsy shop with all kinds of stuff.
